Ducks take back-to-back win over Howard


WASHINGTON DC – The Oregon No. 13 volleyball team opened its three-game road swing Thursday with a 3-0 (25-21, 26-24, 25-22) victory over Howard. Play less than an hour from your home, Taylor Borup recorded a record 11 kills against the Bison. The Ducks improved to 7-1 with the sweep.

Defensively, Oregon has limited Howard to a 0.139 hitting percentage to continue their streak of keeping the opposition below 0.200 in each of eight games so far this season. Libero Georgia Murphy collected 14 digs in victory as Abby hansen and Morgan lewis each had four blocks in total.

Karson Bacon (6-0-10) and Gloria mutiri (7-0-12) combined for 13 kills out of 22 swings with zero error, good for a 0.591 hit percentage.

Following: The Ducks remain in the nation’s capital for two games on Friday, starting with a 10 a.m. PT meeting with Harvard. Oregon ends the day against the American host at 4 p.m. The Ducks’ next home game is Wednesday, September 22 for Team Pac-12’s opener against Oregon State.

Oregon took the lead 10-2 in the first set. Taylor williams, playing his first game of the season, had three kills in the Ducks’ early start. The home side scored the next five points to get closer to striking distance, but Oregon maintained their advantage throughout the set. Howard (1-7) moved closer to a point late in the set – UO led 22-21 – but the Ducks responded with the final three points to take a 1-0 lead.

The Bison controlled the opening stages of the second set, winning seven of the first 10 points. Howard was leading 15-7 before Oregon leveled off. Using a 15-4 push, the Ducks rallied and took control of the game. Abby hansen, off the bench, energized the Ducks with three kills during the run. She had another win to put Oregon in the lead, 24-21.

Howard pushed back three set points and tied the game at 24, but followed up with a serve error to give UO a fourth chance to close the game. Elise Ferreira returned to the service line and delivered an ace to give the Ducks a two-set lead.

Oregon had eight service aces in Thursday’s game with two apiece from Ferriera, Murphy and Becca Morse. Ferriera also had 24 assists and nine recoveries against the Bison.

The teams traded points throughout the first half of the third set, but a four-point run from Howard gave the home side an 18-15 advantage. However, the Ducks rallied to win eight of the next nine points for a 23-19 lead, forcing a time out for the Bison. Bacon had two kills while Hansen was part of three blocks in the decisive run.

Howard once again fought back and was at one point – UO led 23-22 – when Borup recorded back-to-back wins to end the game. On the final game, the head coach Matt Ulmer had a successful challenge to cancel a call as Borup’s attack landed off.

Notable: Kiari robey made his first career start and had a kill on two attacks … Daley mcclellan made his career first appearance, serving for Bacon in the first set.
