Jeff Welsch to Lead Montana Newsrooms for Lee Enterprises | Local

Jeff Welsch, longtime Montana journalist, author and news director, takes on an expanded role at Lee Enterprises’ Montana newspapers.

Welsch, co-founder and editor of, Lee’s statewide sports news website, and executive sports editor for all Lee properties in the state, will take over the management of information operations as well as sports.

Welsch was named editor of Montana on Wednesday by David McCumber, chief information officer for Lee Enterprises in the western United States. Welsch will oversee news and sports operations for the Billings Gazette, Helena Independent Record, Montana Standard, Missoulian and Ravalli Republic.

“Jeff is a thoughtful, driven journalist with a passion for Montana, exceptional reporting skills, and a deep respect for the people who work for him,” McCumber said. “His leadership will improve all of our businesses in Montana.”

Welsch, who worked for newspapers in Arizona, Idaho and Oregon before moving to Montana in 2004, took over as sports editor at The Gazette in 2014 and took on his role at when its creation in 2016.

Welsch has authored or co-authored six books, including “Montana Greats: From A (Absarokee) to Z (Zurich), The Greatest From 264 Montana Communities” and “Backroads & Byways of Montana” with his wife, Sherry Moore.

Montana’s Lee Enterprise newspapers include the Billings Gazette, Missoulian, Helena Independent Record, The Montana Standard, and Ravalli Republic.
