Oregon vs Cal game preview
Why is Cal going to win
Oregon was already shaky – with a tough first 40 minutes against Arizona and a stunning late-game loss to Stanford – and now they are losing leader CJ Verdell for the season with a leg injury.
So far, the run has been a disappointment for a team at Cal who should consider this game to make a big statement, and not just to survive. However, the defense is strong enough to withstand the run – only hammered by TCU so far – and the still-down Oregon defense struggles to find consistent defensive saves.
Veteran QB Chase Garbers hasn’t been consistent, but he’s able to knock just enough games down to be a problem. He will keep throwing, but …

Why Oregon will win
Cal just doesn’t get any break from the pass defense.
He actually did a decent job against Washington State, but that didn’t matter because his own attack was stopped in its tracks. For the most part, the D just can’t stop teams from increasing passing yards, with TCU, Sacramento State and Washington combining over 900 yards.
This is where Anthony Brown has to be better. He doesn’t shoot peaks, but he wasn’t specific enough. He hits enough down shots to keep things going, but he doesn’t connect on midrange shots.
In this, all he and the Oregon offense have to do is make no mistake. Get a few points at the start, don’t give up on easy turnovers and assume 24 points probably get there, 30 almost certainly do.

what’s going to happen
It looks like two months have passed since Oregon was abandoned by Stanford, but a lot has changed since then.
With all the craziness across the landscape, it’s all still there. Win, win the Pac-12 Championship, and the 12-1 Ducks will absolutely – okay, almost certainly – have a place at the college football playoff table.
It’s time to make a national statement – or at least enough to get back on the radar. The final score might not be amazing, but it will be a strong overall rebound after Stanford collapsed.
Cal’s offense won’t be able to keep pace after the Ducks score a second quarter to overcome a rocky first quarter.
